Editor's Introduction

Jai Jinendra,

Firstly, a very belated Happy Diwali and New Year to you all.   Unfortunately, our publication dates and Diwali did not match this year so we were unable to give you a Diwali special.  However, it has given us a wonderful opportunity to explore some Jain and non-Jain festivals that are often over-shadowed by Diwali.  We have a feature article on the significance of Gyan Panchami, a festival to focus our efforts to cultivating right knowledge.  This is supported by an explanation of the Mangal Divo, which is a song and ritual to celebrate right knowledge and which seamlessly links to a feature article on Hemchandracharya, who was a profoundly significant Jain personality and responsible for the Mangal Divo ritual.

I am very excited to present to you in this Interfaith Special several articles looking at other faiths, and the truths that we as Jains can derive from these philosophies.  To honour Christmas we have an article on Jesus and Jains, to mark the birthday of Guru Nanak we have a contribution on Sikhism and an article comparing the Jewish festival of Yom Kippur to Paryushan.  For those of you who missed the YJ event on Hinduism and Jainism, there is an illuminating article about the relationship between Hindu and Jain philosophy.

Diwali may be over but there are plenty of other festivals and occasions we can utilise to inspire and celebrate our spiritual journeys.

Jyoti Mehta.
